Maggie Gyllenhaal Discusses 9/11

Tuesday April 26, 2005
When celebrities open their mouths about politics, personal attacks are seldom far behind. Maggie Gyllenhaal stars in "The Great New Wonderful," a film about September 11. After a screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, the 27-year-old actress commented that the United States "is responsible in some way" for the attack on the World Trade Center. Not much later, a fan page was forced to take down their comments section as scathing criticism overwhelmed the site. Gyllenhaal, however, refuses to back down from her original comment. "Not to have the courage to ask these questions of ourselves is to betray the victims of 9/11," she said.
