Sunday May 28, 2006
The Wind That Shakes The Barley, a drama about the Irish civil war, received the Palme d'Or at the ceremony tonight. Ken Loach, the esteemed 69-year-old English filmmaker who has had eight films in competition at Cannes, called the award a "triumph for political cinema." The Grand Prize was given to Bruno Dumont's Flandres.
The Wind That Shakes The Barley tells the story of two brothers (Cillian Murphy and Padraic Delany) in 1920s Ireland who join in the struggle for independence against Britain. Wong Kar Wai, president of the nine-member jury that included Zhang Ziyi and Monica Belluchi, said the decision was unanimous.
