New DVD: Winter Soldier
Tuesday May 30, 2006
Children "blown away," villages torched, civilians raped and killed: the stream of atrocities the young men recount with stern faces and an unnerving matter-of-fact tone is horrifying. In 1971, before a shocked public, a group of Vietnam veterans (among them a young John Kerry) bore witness to the everyday carnage they participated in during their tours of duty. Winter Soldier, available on DVD today, is the devastating document of their courage.
In the wake of allegations of a massacre of Iraqi civilians in Haditha by U.S. Marines, the film has lost nothing of its timeliness and incendiary power: "I didn't like being an animal, and I didn't like seeing everybody else turning into animals either." 5/5 stars.
