DVD Reviews: Memories of Murder, L'Effrontée, The Golem

Sunday March 25, 2007

A Jewish proto-Frankenstein, teenage Charlotte Gainsbourg, and bumbling Korean policemen hunting a serial killer: we've added reviews of three DVDs that are well worth your attention.

Paul Wegener's 1920 The Golem, How He Came into the World prefigures an entire genre of horror movies. Before The Host, Bong Joon-ho twisted another genre with his unpredictable ways, and long before The Science of Sleep, the young daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin starred in one of the sweetest French coming-of-age films to a Europop beat. Read the DVD reviews of Memories of Murder, L'Effrontée and The Golem.

More: Bong Joon-ho talks about The Host, Charlotte Gainsbourg sings a duet with mom Jane Birkin, and Google Video has The Golem in its entirety--although the quality of the Kino DVD is much superior.
