Fatih Akin Wins European Parliament's Lux Prize

German filmmaker Fatih Akin
(Head
On) won the the
Lux
Prize, the European Parliament's inaugural film award, for
The
Edge of Heaven (Auf der anderen Seite). Hanna Schygulla, star of
the film, accepted the award, a trophy shaped like the Tower of Babel, at a
ceremony held in Strasborg, France.
The Edge of Heaven already received the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film
Festival and the best screenplay award at
Cannes.
The second part of a trilogy which includes
Head
On, The Edge of Heaven is also Germany's entry for the
foreign-language
Oscar.
The film took the prize over two other nominees, Cristian
Mungiu's
4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days and Manoel Oliveira's
Belle
Toujours.
