New on DVD: Syndromes and a Century The latest film by Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul (he has invited Western audiences to simply call him "Joe") arrives on DVD today. Released in the U.S. to much critical acclaim last year, Syndromes and a Century occupies a fertile space between narrative and art object, where simple interactions accumulate and gain weight in a web of meaning that is held together as much by space and mood as it is by character and story. If that sounds awfully pretentious, don't be discouraged -- many of the film's pleasures lie right on the surface. Watch the trailer, compare DVD prices, or read Jürgen's review.
