Sundance Watch: Polanski Doc Sells, Sordid Tales of Swag
Monday January 21, 2008
If the reports are to believed, Christine Jeff's dark comedy Sunshine Cleaning is nothing like the perky Sundance sensation Little Miss Sunshine, but the film's star Emily Blunt (pictured with The Great Buck Howard co-star Colin Hanks) is hot stuff, promoting not one but two films this year. The first major sale of the festival went to Marina Zenovich's documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, securing North American rights with HBO and a worldwide distribution deal from the Weinstein Co.
As expected, stories of swag abound. Premiere's Glenn Kenny scored hair products for his balding head and witnessed less-than-friendly treatment of unnamed Mexican talent lingering too close to free goodies. Hannah Takes The Stairs actress Greta Gerwig got herself a hair dryer; she had to pose with the object before taking it home.
The hook-up that has all tongues wagging: Mary-Kate Olsen making out with Sir Ben "Ghandi" Kingsley -- on camera, of course. The Wackness hasn't been bought yet, but the buzz for Jonathan Levine's debut film is strong.
