New on DVD: Grace is Gone
John Cusack is doing his part. He co-wrote, produced, and starred in War, Inc, a political satire set in fictional land of Turaqistan, where corporations rule. According to indieWire, the film made nearly $50k on only two screens on its opening weekend, positioning itself as "the first specialty film with Iraq War themes to connect successfully with audiences." James Strouse's resoundingly sad drama Grace is Gone, however, did not fare nearly as well. John Cusack plays a grieving father who can't get himself to tell his two daughters that their mother has been killed in action. Rather than facing reality, he takes the girls on a road trip. Despite winning the Grand Jury Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance film festival, two Golden Globe nominations, and Oscar buzz for Cusack, the film disappeared from theaters. Released on Memorial Day, the Grace is Gone DVD is a more than fitting way to reflect on the personal cost of war.

I purchased ‘Grace is Gone’….really a good movie, great acting and the girls adorable…But the emotions so RAW sometimes….hard to take. Thanks for filming in Florida…hope it was a good experience….Ollie Sullivan
Yes, those little girls were amazing, weren’t they? Their natural performances make the film seem that much more real.
Another great film shot in Florida is Victor Nunez’ “Ruby in Paradise,” unfortunately not yet released on DVD.
More from John Cusack: He has created apolitical ad stating that John McCain is a war-profiteering clone of President George W. Bush. It’s going to air on Bravo cable channel and in Washington, D.C., on CNN, MSNBC and Comedy Central.
