Review: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, a Film for Children and Adults

As a self respecting guide to World/Independent film, Marcy had many fine reasons for seeing Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, a G rated movie based on a popular doll: 1) It is directed by Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema (I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, Mansfield Park); 2) Abigail Breslin, Oscar-nominated for her performance in Little Miss Sunshine, has star billing; 3) the ensemble cast also features many accomplished character actors, including Stanley Tucci, Wallace Shawn, and Joan Cusack.
The verdict: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl is a fine film for both children and adults. The nine million dollar production, one of the last releases from now-defunct distributor Picturehouse, opened Friday in limited release, leading the indie film box office, and will open nationwide on July 2nd.
