Troubled Water Wins At Hamptons Film Festival

Norwegian director Eric Poppe's Troubled Water won both the Golden Starfish for Best Narrative Feature and the audience award at the 16th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival. This year's festival screened 122 films, including 14 world, 23 North American and 18 U.S. premieres.
With the exception of a handful of the prestigious spotlight releases -- including Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom and Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York -- the majority of the titles screened at the festival have not yet secured distribution: an impressive and eclectic selection of fine foreign and independent filmmaking, from Poppe's award-winner to Boogie, a domestic drama from Romania, featuring a supporting performance by Anamaria Marinca, best known for her powerful work in 4 Months, Three Weeks, 2 Days.
Our favorites also included the Finnish Black Ice, about a vengeful wife who befriends her husband's unsuspecting younger lover, Hans Steinbichler's affecting My Mother, My Bride, and I about a maladjusted Bavarian bachelor and his Romanian mail-order bride, and the earnest Goethe adapation Werther, featuring a stunning Hannah Herzsprung.
