The 2009 Indie Spirit Nominations Are...

Jason Bateman and Sandra Oh announced this year's nominees for the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards. Lance Hammer's Ballast, Courtney Hunt's Frozen River, and Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married are the clear front runners with six nominations each.
The biggest shocks this year: Woody Allen's Best Screenplay nomination for the shoddy Vicky Christina Barcelona, and Summer Bishil's Best Female Lead nod for her flat performance in the lurid coming-of-age drama Towelhead.

A screenplay nomination for Vicky Cristina Barcelona is only a shock in your pathetic little echo chamber of a movie blog that attempts to be “cool” by playing contrarian at every film.
Hey Robert,
you’re right that some of our opinions aren’t all that popular. But if you look at our top tens for 2008 (which we’ll post in a few days) and our reviews in general, you’ll see that many of the films we like are critically acclaimed and do well with audiences. (See, for instance, Tell No Oneor A Christmas Tale)
So, hopefully it’s not just a matter of being contrarian — I’d like to think that it’s more complicated than that. You might not agree with everything we have to say, but I can guarantee you that these are all honest opinions. We’re serious about movies, we think about them a good deal, and we’re trying to explain the judgments we make as well as we can. Isn’t that all you can ask of a critic?
“Cool” doesn’t really enter into it.
Thanks for commenting,
Jurgen
Damn! Why do you guys have to be so nice all the time?!? Makes me feel guilty…
