Golden Globe Winner Mickey Rourke Thanks His Dogs

Monday January 12, 2009
Mickey Rourke - Photo by Jason Merritt / Getty ImagesDanny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner of the night, picking up four Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Kate Winslet broke her infamous award-winning slump with two Globes: Best Supporting Actress for The Reader and Best Actress for Revolutionary Road. The moment that thrilled us: Mickey Rourke's Best Actor win for his searing performance in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.

Rourke looked every inch the rock star with his long hair, satin lapels, and sun glasses. In his gracious acceptance speech, Rourke thanked his dogs, both living and deceased. "Sometimes when you're alone," he said, "all you got is your dog and they meant the world to me."

Sally Hawkins and Collin Farrell also received Golden Globes for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Comedy for Happy-Go-Lucky and In Bruges, two of our favorite films of 2008.

Mickey Rourke’s Oscar chances, to my utter delight, have risen. Now if only the film itself had more buzz…

By the way, I’m starting to empathize with you guys now. I seem to be the only person on this planet who hated The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
