Catherine Breillat takes on a classic fairytale in her latest film The Sleeping Beauty. To save the life of Princess Anastasia (Carla Besnainou), three rookie fairies alter a witch's curse, committing the princess to sleep for 100 years. While asleep, Anastasia wanders through magical yet sometimes sinister kingdoms ruled by children, dwarfs, and gypsies. Eventually, she awakes, a 16-year-old girl obsessed with the memory of her true love, the great-great grandfather of her newest suitor.
An Official Selection of the 2011 San Francisco International Film Festival, The Sleeping Beauty is currently screening at the IFC Film Center in New York City and opens on July 29 in Los Angeles. Read Beck Ireland's review.
