Faust Wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival Awards

Russian director Aleksander Sokurov's Faust was the surprise winner of the Golden Lion, the festival's top prize, at this year's 2011  Venice Film Festival. A modern rendition of the German classic, the film was award the top film prize over top contenders, defeating high profile films by David Cronenberg, Roman Polanski, and George Clooney.

The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Cai Shangjun for the Chinese entry People Mountain People Sea. Michael Fassbender (pictured) was awarded Best Actor for his performance as a sex addict in Shame, a film by Steve McQueen.
