DVD Bites: Ascension

Wednesday October 26, 2005
For people who enjoy serious sci-fi in the vein of "Solaris," Pennsylvania filmmaker John Krawlzik's first feature film "Ascension" is worth checking out. Shot for under $100,000, "Ascension" is a low-budget high-concept thriller about a suicide investigation on a remote space outpost. Despite the shoestring budget, the film looks terrific: it's shot on 35mm and Krawlzik has an extraordinary eye for striking compositions. The moodiness and claustrophobia become almost intolerable as the mysterious tale unfolds. Krawlzik says he is planning to fund his next movie entirely through "selling junk on eBay." We wish him the best of luck. [posted by Jurgen]
