Rani Mukherjee is the daughter of director Ram Mukherjee. Her mother Krishna was a playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer and director. Bollywood actress Kajol is her cousin. Clearly the actress Rani has the right credentials -- and genes -- which gave her a quick start in the business. But Rani Mukherjee has proven herself to be a formidable talent in her own right.
Her first Bollywood movie was <I>Raja Ki Ayegi Barrat</i>. She began to receive serious attention for her acting abilities after her performance in in <I>Ghulam</i>. Rani was in headlines again receiving the best supporting actress award from for what is now considered her breakthrough role in <I>Kuch Kuch Hota Hai</i>.
Rani Mukherjee has gone on to appear in many more films including <I>Yuva</i>, <i>Hum Tum, 1857: The Rising</i> and </i>Bajirao Mastani</i> and <I>Saawariya</i>.
