Billy Elliot
Little
Northern English boy learns to dance ballet instead of box. Well, well. I haven't
seen this yet, but the premise seems awfully formulaic to me. You know, the
coal mining father doesn't approve, but then the kid's determination wins everybody
over. It's going to be mighty inspirational, I think.
But to be fair,
most reviews make it sound like director Stephen Daldry managed to wrest something
new and interesting from the time-honored formula. Apparently, the emotion really
works and people find this film quite a charmer. Maybe I'll give it a chance
-- as long as I don't have to see his Full Monty.

Billy Elliot is a treat. A film that leaves you with a big smile and a broken
heart, wanting it to watch it all over again.

For once, the billing doesn't lie. It's a breath of fresh air, which
should challenge our notions of what our homegrown cinema can aspire to -
both populist and persuasive. And the kitchen sink has never looked so gleaming.

If you've been to see "Girlfight," Karyn Kusama's new movie about
a young female boxer from the housing projects of Brooklyn, "Billy Elliot"
will seem very familiar indeed.
