Madadayo
From the highly regarded Japanese director of DREAMS and RAN, is MADADAYO,
a tribute to much-loved professor, Hyakken Uchida. In 1943, Uchida announces
to his students that he will retire his position to pursue a writing career.
Each year the students visit him, throwing an annual birthday party to toast
him and thank him for the way that he mentored them. Mixed with fall-out from
WWII, the movie observes the way that Uchida's relationship with his students
grows and matures far beyond the classroom. MADADAYO is a lovely story with
a strong message and beautifully filmed imagery.

Reviews
The New York Times
"Madadayo, in its exquisite and respectful sincerity, stands out against both the cynicism and the maudlin excess that characterize so many recent American movies and perhaps this is why its release in this country has been so long delayed."Boston Globe
"...a confident, compelling film..."
Film Journal International
"...a humane gem."
Roger Ebert - (3 stars)
"This is the kind of film we would all like to make, if we were very old and very serene."
