If you have any heart at all and love movies, chances are you love Cinema Paradiso, or at least once loved Cinema Paradiso (I am in the second category.) Director Guiseppe Tornatore, who brought us the classic ode to movies and small-town life is now back with Malena, a coming-of-age story about young Renato (Guiseppe Sulfaro) and his lust for Malena, played by Monica Bellucci. The soundtrack is once more by Ennio Morricone.

"The film torturously tries to transform this theme in scenes of comedy,
nostalgia and bittersweet regret, but somehow we doubt its sincerity, maybe
because the camera lingers so lovingly on the callipygian charms of the actress
Monica Bellucci. There is noting quite so awkward as a film that is one thing
while it pretends to be another."

What begins as a nostalgic sex comedy inevitably falls prey to those darker
fascist elements, but the resulting tonal shifts never completely blend into
a satisfying whole.
