Any film with chickens in it is a good film

The nominees for best special effects are:

GLADIATOR
HOLLOW MAN
THE PERFECT STORM

I've heard a lot about how they made the water look real in "The Perfect Storm" using computer imaging. Wow! Real-looking water! I got so excited I forgot to go and see the movie!

Since the acadamy nominated only three movies and I'm not a big fan of special effects, I figure I can get away with two nominations for the only two films with visual trickery that I could stand to watch in 2000:

X-Men
