· Best Supporting Actress ·

The nominations for Best Supporting Actress are:

Judi Dench - CHOCOLAT
Marcia Gay Harden - POLLOCK
Kate Hudson - ALMOST FAMOUS
Frances McDormand - ALMOST FAMOUS
Julie Walters - BILLY ELLIOT

Samantha Morton and Billy Crudup in "Jesus' Son"

The Academy clearly has a thing for Judi Dench. I guess it's because she is an English Dame. She already took this award for Shakespeare in Love -- and that was for only eight minutes screen time. Kate Hudson was pretty enough in Almost Famous, but award-worthy? I'd sooner vote for Rebecca Pidgeon in State and Main, who was both beautiful and smart, or Frances McDormand as the mother in Almost Famous who could make Billy Crudup shake in his rock-star boots. Zhang Ziyi gets a nod for being the best martial arts brat. And Catherine Deneuve convincing as a factory worker? Amazing.

Here are the nominations for Best Supporting Actress, as they should be:

Frances McDormand, Almost Famous
Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Catherine Deneuve, Dancer in the Dark
Samantha Morton, Jesus' Son
Rebecca Pidgeon, State & Main
