"Surprising world film choices. No Yi-Yi. No time for Drunken Horses. No In the Mood for Love. In fast, besides Crouching Tiger, I haven't heard of any of these films."

And once again, foreign films managed to sneak into categories that were traditionally reserved for American fare -- but with domestic product in 2000 trashier than usual, maybe that's not such a surprise.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" just broke "Life is Beautful"'s record at the box office for most lucrative foreign film, and now it raked in the most nominations for a world film ever -- ten, count 'em, ten of them, second only to Gladiator.

roin so many categories. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of Billy Elliot (to put it politely), and it's always somewhat troubling that the Foreign category allows for only one entry per country, drowning out many other worthy films from countries like Taiwan and France (where is Yi-Yi, for instance?)

So without further ado, here are the nominations of the 73rd Academy Awards that actual matter: these are the categories with foreign nominations. I will expand this section to include more coverage of the nominees, so check back here for updates, gossip, and details about world film at the Oscars.
