| Shock: Marquis de Sade Censored Again, Online! | |||||||||||||||||||
| Secret location of the site that was too hot for Fox | |||||||||||||||||||
If you answered d), I've got something for you.... psst... come a little closer. Of course you've seen Quills by now, the wicked Philip Kaufman movie starring Geoffry Rush as the Marquis de Sade. (If you haven't, read my review and then find the next theater.) It's a fiendish, gleeful romp through the pleasure and pain of being a locked-up madman that turns into a treatise on artistic freedom and the evils of censorship. Well, how
ironic. |

If you have your ear close to the ground of web related film news, you might have caught a litte item few days ago: Fox Searchlight closed down the "Vice" section of its official Quills website. Apparently, this part of the site, clearly labeled "Adult," was too hot for the "independent" subdivision of the people who brought us "Temptation Island." But you know what they say: information wants to be free, and there are no limits to which kinky information won't go to reach the titillated masses. So here, smuggled out in my laundry basket and written in de Sade's own blood, is the link to the secret site with a working "Vice" section. Click on the Marquis' bed to find out sexy tidbits such as the first known usage of the Spanish Fly, find a collection of Bible/sex sites, quotes from the Marquis, a multiple choice test to find out what kind of deviant you are, and (especially entertaining, if this is your cup of excrement) a community smut writing project. Funny -- I probably wouldn't have looked twice at this site if it hadn't been taken down. It's entertaining in an office-break sort of way, though. In the spirit of the Marquis, let's just hope that this was a shrewd marketing move to revive interest in the film and not a knee-jerk reaction to somebody's misguided idea of enforced morality.
