Oscar Nominees: Best Foreign Film
For the record, the sugar-sweet box office hit "Amelie" is a stinker. This opinion has gotten me in trouble with many, from irate family members to angry emails who accused Jurgen and I of being "insular, tragic hipsters." If I were a betting on the Oscars, however, I'd put all my money on Jean-Pierre Jeunet's heartwarming film to take Oscar gold. What a shame. More interesting entries hail from Argentina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, India, and Norway.

1) France: Amelie
Amélie is a shy young Parisian woman whose life is transformed when she discovers a child's hidden treasure box. Inspired by the owner's joy when she returns it, Amélie becomes a secret do-gooder, bringing happiness to the lives of those around her. Her attraction to a timid young man, however, leaves her wondering if she will be able to find the same joy in her own life. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeune and starring France's new sensation Audrey Tatou.

2)Bosnia & Herzegovina: No Man's Land
Ciki, a Bosnian soldier, and Nino, a Serb, find themselves trapped together in a mined trench between enemy lines. As the two men argue over politics and attempt to outwit each other, Ciki's companion, Cera, lies wounded on a landmine that will explode if he is moved. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Bosnia & Herzegovina. Directed by Danis Tanovic.

3) India: Lagaan
When an Indian community complains to its local British official about the excessive tax, or "lagaan," they are being charged, the official challenges the local people to a cricket match. If they can win the match, the lagaan will be dropped for three years; if they lose, however, they must pay triple. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker

4) Argentina: Son of The Bride
Rafael, the domineering owner of a smart Buenos Aires restaurant, is always busy with no time to spend on his emotions. Suddenly, however, his father decides to "remarry" his wife in a religious ceremony, regardless of the fact that she is now in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer's. The decision spreads an escalating shockwave of chaos through the family. Directed by Juan José Campanella.

5) Norway: Elling
Two former mental patients--the timid, fussy Elling and the hulking Kjell--share an apartment together as they attempt to adjust to life outside of the hospital. Relying on each other for support, the unlikely friends begin to venture out into the world. Directed by Petter Naess.
