A Flop in China?
"I read in the New York Times that CTHD is pretty much considered a commercial flop in China."

Foreign Oscar Nominees
"Surprising world film choices. No Yi-Yi. No time for Drunken Horses. No In the Mood for Love. In fast, besides Crouching Tiger, I haven't heard of any of these films."

I haven't seen Gladiator. I couldn't care less about Erin Brockovich. I thought Traffic was a bust. Chocolat was a disgrace. Face it, the only movie nominated we really care about is Ang Lee's marvelous martial arts spectacle Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

And what a movie it is: I first posted an early article about this upcoming Chinese movie that could get big back in October-- and boy has it gotten big. It topped Life is Beautiful as the highest-grossing foreign film ever months ago. It recentely passed the $100 million dollar mark. On the Op-Ed pages of the New York Times, Salman Rushdie editorialized about the future of Hollywood and how Crouching Tiger made suburban malls safe for subtitles. And now there's the Academy Awards: Second only to Ridley Scotts's macho Gladiator, the Chinese film with its gracefully flying heroines won 10 nominations.

How many of the nominations will actually turn into little golden men? Vote in the forum, where most people seem to think Ang Lee deserves every single one of them.

This Sunday, I will be glued to the TV with a few cold ones and root for a movie that combines sweeping grandeur, unashamed beauty, and exhilerating kung-fu action into an amazing whole. Hang out in the chat room with other Crouching Tiger fans on Oscar night and cheer with us at Ang Lee's triumphs -- or howl and boo as Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott take home the loot.

Watch this space for constantly updated info on exactly how Ang Lee, Li Mu Bai, and the other Raiders of the Green Destiny are doing. Chat with us in real time and root for the most butt-kicking lyrical movie to ever grace American screens.
