The Wisdom of the Crocodiles

Dateline: 5/22/00

This summer, would you consider a film starring Jude Law as an ice-cold, handsome vampire who seduces beautiful women in order to survive? Would you consider missing a film with Jude Law?

The stunning British actor is best known for his Oscar nominated performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley. He also received the dubious honor of making People Magazine's fifty most beautiful people list. But compared to the other hyped up actors of his generation (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Ethan Hawke), Jude Law really is that beautiful, that talented. He leaps from the screen, screaming swoon for me, ogle me, I am a movie star. Think Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman. Smooth, charming, intelligent, and enticingly brooding.

The Wisdom of the Crocodiles, a stylish British erotic thriller, opens July 14th in New York and Los Angeles. Law plays Steven Grlscz, a man who appears to have everything - handsome, successful, witty, and generous. He masterfully seduces the women he selects by analyzing them and swiftly winning their trust. For him, this is not a game. It is a lonely and desperate pursuit for a woman’s love he literally cannot live without.

When the body of his latest conquest is found at sea, Steven knows the trail will eventually lead to him and contacts the police under the pretext of aiding their investigation. While Inspector Healey (Timothy Spall) and Detective Roche (Jack Davenport) pursue their inquiries, Steven has already moved on to his next victim.

Enter Anne Levels (Elina Lowensohn), an intelligent, self-possessed, and moody beauty. Levels proves more of a challenge than Steven ever expected. Proof of Anne’s perfect love is vital to Steven’s survival; and her uncertainty is slowly killing him.

You don't want to miss this gem--winner of the Grand Prize of European Fantasy Film in Silver. This is also the first film from director by Po-Chih Leong since Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. Elina Lowensohn, a Romanian actress, is a compelling match for Law. She's had experience with vampires, playing one herself in the dark indie film Nadja. She's also a regular player in American indie director Hal Hartley's films, including Flirt, Simple Men, and Amateur. Can she resist Jude Law?

Can you?
