Water Drops on Burning Rocks
The
second offering of Ozon is markedly different in style. Water
Drops on Burning Rocks is based on an early (and previously never produced)
play by German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The story is set in Germany
in the 1970s. A smug and attractive 50-year-old businessman picks up and seduces
fresh-faced, carrot-topped 19-year-old. His young lover swiftly moves in. But
the relationship sours when both their ex-girlfriends suddenly show up.
The New York Times calls the film a brilliant satire of emotional politics. And like in Criminal Lovers, sex is equated with power. The abuse of this power drives the film. Manipulation between lovers is the heart of the horrific and occasionally comic situations that arise.
For this film, the fact that the material is adapted from a play heightens the tension. He told IndieWIRE that throughout the film, he hopes the viewer will watch the characters and then question themselves. He wants them to wonder: "Am I in the cinema, am I in the theater, am I identifying with these people or not?" According to Ozon, the theatricality of the play will open those questions every time.
Ozon's Future
Despite small budgets and mixed reviews, Ozon keeps on making films that challenge
and engage. Given the quality of the talent who want to work with him, and the
buzz he creates, it is clear Ozon will be around for awhile. "In 1970, Fassbinder
made 7 films and 3 plays," Ozon told IndieWIRE. "So I have some work to do."
