Look out for The Limey

Dateline: 9/15/99

Steven Soderbergh made a name for himself ten years ago with sex, lies, and videotape. The film put Sundance Film Festival on the map and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The low budget film became an instant indie classic, grossed over $25 million, and turned Soderbergh into a superstar.

Well, sort of. In the last decade, there have been numerous critically acclaimed films - and not one hit. His sophomore effort Kafka flopped at the box office. Rave reviews and big name stars George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez brought out reasonable crowds for Out of Sight, a funny, smart, and fast film.

Profit, however, does not equal good cinema. Soderbergh's oevre is diverse, and eclectic. There's King of the Hill, a depression age tale of a boy on his own, a film that made me see ketchup in a whole new light. (Imagine mixing it with boiling water and calling it food. "Good soup," the father says, gulping it down.)

Then there's Gray's Anatomy, Spalding Gray's hilarious, frenetic monologue on finding a cure for an incurable eye condition. And Schitzopolis,an inventive and whacky cult favorite starring Soderbergh himself, playing, among other things, a business executive, a religious speaker, and an insecticide man.

So I am excited about his new movie, The Limey. The film, which played in Cannes and is due for limited North American release on October 8, follows a tough English ex-con who travels to Los Angeles to avenge his daughter's death. The impressive cast includes Academy Award nominated actors Terence Stamp, Lesley Ann Warren and Peter Fonda.
