The 40th New York Film Festival
Jack Nicholson in "About Schmit," the festival's opening night selection.

It's as picky as ever: this week, the New York Film Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary with another selection of feature films that are destined to be talked about in the months to come. As always, the festival does not give a prize - being included in the selection is honor enough. This year's highlights include new work by PT Anderson, Alexander Payne, Manuelo di Olivera, Aki Karuismäki, Im Kwon-Taek, Paul Schrader, Pedro Almodovar, and Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami (who was denied a visa by the US government and cannot attend.)
