The End is Nigh: My Favorite Apocalyptic Movies

Dateline: 12/13/99

The big day is only a couple of weeks away. The pressure to do something extremely special that night is almost unbearable.

If you're one of the few souls left on the planet who doesn't have extravagant plans for watching the first sunrise of the new millennium from a cruise ship hovering over the dateline or flying from Paris to New York on the Concorde to see it twice, then I've got an idea for you.

I recommend getting ready for the end of the world by stocking up on alcoholic drinks, canned food, and a big stack of apocalyptic movies. There is an amazing number of movies concerning the end of everything, and what better night than this to watch them all? The people at the gala events and the cruise ships will witness another boring midnight while you sip on champagne in the comfort and safety of your own home and watch the world being laid to waste, nuked, blasted, shredded, and blown to bits by giant meteors, mad scientists, evil generals, and homicidal monkeys. Talk about a catharsis that will leave you cleansed for another thousand years. Goes to show once again that movies are better than real life.

And if the world doesn't end, check back in next December when I review movies you ought to see in 2001
