Must-See Millennial Mayhem
12 Monkeys
Because I love everything Terry Gilliam does, no questions asked.
Akira
Japanese animation at its eye-popping best. Never mind the plot--just
watch the effect-laden images and enjoy Tokyo blowing up over and over again.
What happens in the end? I couldn't tell you, but it sure looks cool.
Apocalypse
Now
Of course, it's techincally a war movie. But with everything erupting in napalm
fire and the Doors intoning "The End," you'll feel plenty apocalyptic
by the time this movie is over. The horror! The horror!
Last
Night
Not to be missed. This quiet, intimate Canadian movie is a blessing. If you're
lucky, it's still playing at a theater near you.
The Seventh Seal
I recommend Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece wheever I get the chance. If
you want a feel for what the last turn-of-the-millennium was like (and see one
of the most acclaimed pictures ever made), rent this one.
Until the End of
the World
Some think this fine Wim Wenders movie is about an hour too long--I happen to
disagree. It's a science-fiction road trip, a family drama, a rock video, and
a treatise about the power of images rolled into one.
