It's a jungle out there. Once you step past the formula-ridden bounderies
of Hollywood, there are
a few hundred countries who make their own movies, with their own history,
humor, stars, classics, and music. Like everywhere, there's great stuff
and a lot of junk. How are you going to find the good films, especially
when they're subtitled? Here's how.

Rent, Steal, Borrow
Well, don't steal, unless it's an Abbie Hoffmann movie. But there are
plenty of free movies out there for you to explore, and we recommend taking
a good look before plunking down hard-earned cash for a DVD you might
not watch more than once or twice. Public libraries are fantastic resources
for film fans. Being certain that a DVD has high rewatchability interest
is key.

Get Smart About the Technology
Digital doesn't necessarily mean better. Take a few minutes to read up
about transfers, restorations, wide screen, anamorphic ratios, dubbing,
compression, and extra features. Whenever possible, you want a clear,
crisp, and restored version of a classic world film rather than a hastily
manufactured rerelease of some back catalogue clunker.
