Daisies
reviewed by Beck Finley

Guide Rating -

Directed by Vera Chytilova, "Daisies" is a stylish and outrageous romp with a conscience. Deciding to be bad because the world is bad, the two protagonists con men into buying them extravagant dinners, have a wild picnic on their bed and set their apartment on fire. The food, the drink, the wardrobe. It's good to be bad, and even better to be depraved. The gluttonous final scene ends in remorse and its violent climax leaves the viewer with much to think about.

This 1966 Czech New Wave feminist farce makes modern-day Amelie's supposed existentialist message seem like child's play. With glorious set design by Ester Krumbachova ("Ucho aka The Ear") and lyrical cinematography and special effects by Jaroslav Kucera ("Morgiana") the film is as timeless as it is beautiful. Having been held from a release for over a year and then only shown briefly before it was banned, Daisies brings new acclaim to the series of Czech New Wave films from Facets Video. It's certainly a rediscovered gem and my new favorite movie.
