Pre-Industrial Light and Magic
As producer, director, actor, and designer, George Méliès pioneered
special effects, trick film, fantasy, and many other techniques that
have been staples of the medium film for over a hundred years. This
DVD packages well-restored prints of his work (including the famous
"Trip to the Moon") with an informative documentary by Jacques
Meny. Unfortunately, some of the reenactments are laughably bad --
even though Méliès' life is fascinating. Watch the documentary once
and keep the disc for Méliès' own work, which is marvelously inventive
and as fresh and dazzling as it must have seemed 100 years ago. |
