Guide Review
Los Hombres Calientes
A showcase of performances and performers, "Calle 54" travels from Cuba to New York, Miami, and Europe to meet illustrious musicians and hear them play. The film follows a simple format: a performer is briefly introduced, followed by a tune played in a studio in front of brightly lit backdrops. For more in-depth information on everybody, you have to turn to the DVD extras, but the performances are rousing. I found that this film works better on DVD than the movie theater because you can take breaks, adjust the volume to your liking, do tequila shots, and dance in your living room. For anybody with an interest in joyous, groovy, and thrilling music, this disc is a must-own. If you enjoyed "Buena Vista Social Club," I'll take bets you'll like this one, too.
