Guide Picks - Marcy's Top Indies |
 |
 |
|
If Marcy ruled the world, these films would be required viewing for every
citizen.

1) Rushmore
How many times have I watched this Wes Anderson film? I've stopped counting.
If only I could have been as cool as Max Fisher. Classic moment: Billy
Murray's cannonball into a dirty swimming pool.
|
 |
2) Memento
Christopher Nolan's thriller about a man with short term memory loss trying
to avenge the murder of his wife is like no film you've ever seen before.
Own it, program your DVD player to play it backwards, and figure out when
he got those tattoos.

 |
3) Ruby
in Paradise
Ashley Judd has never been more luminous. This Victor Nunez film should
be watched again and again. The best movie ever featuring a young woman
writing in her journal, going to work, meeting men, walking on the beach.
It will fill you with sadness and longing.
|
 |
4) Pulp
Fiction
Honor among lowlifes according to Quentin Tarantino. Uma Thurman has never
had a better hairstyle, and John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson make a fantastic
pair of hit men.
|
 |
5) Stranger
Than Paradise
Who knows what's going to happen when your cousin comes in from Poland.
In this early Jim Jarmusch film, the answer is: not much. There's some Screaming
Jay Hawkins, a drive to Florida, some conversation. A classic.
|
 |
6) The
Day Trippers
A top indie film list without Parker Posey is not possible. It was between
the "Day Trippers" and "Party Girl." I went for the
ensemble cast. Liev Schrieber is priceless talking about his dog man novel,
and Hope Davis is so pretty and sad.
|
 |
7) You
Can Count On Me
Playwright Ken Lonergan wrote and directed this small, touching movie about
a brother and sister struggling with life in a small town New York. It will
make you cry - in a good way. Laura Linney is terrific to watch, sleeping
with men because she feels sorry for them.
|
 |
8) Raising
Arizona
My favorite Coen Brothers movie. "Fargo" is great, of course,
and Frances McDormand will be forever immortalized as the best pregnant
cop on the silver screen, but really, what can beat five stolen babies?
Remember when Nicholas Cage was cool? Holly Hunter plays his wife and parole
officer.
|
 |
9) Buffalo
66
Christina Ricci's lingerie tap-dance at a bowling alley is a film moment
not to be missed. Vincent Gallo's directorial debut has already attained
cult status.
|
 |
10) The Sweet Hereafter
It's unspeakingly sad, but this elegiac film about the aftermath
of a bus crash that kills the children of a small town is mesmerizing. Atom
Egogyan directed this film, based on a Russell Banks novel. Featuring a
young and wonderful Sarah Polley as the wheelchair girl.
