Jurgen's Picks - Top Ten Films of 2001
6) Mulholland Drive
Sublimely creepy, David Lynch's Hollywood noir about beautiful women with amnesia, directors cowtowing to mysterious studio bosses, murder, killer acting, and evil chattering octogenerian gnomes was created out of an abortive TV series and deserves a special award for best freak-out ending of the year.

7) Before the Storm
This dark, unsettling thriller from Sweden about a school shooting and international terrorism raises uncomfortable questions about global violence that have become much more pressing since it screened at MoMA's New Directors Festival. With any luck, this fascinating film will see the wide release it deserves.

8) Ghost World
A pitch-perfect look at American adolescence, Terry Zwigoff's adaptation of Daniel Clowes' comic book cuts the bullshit and breathes genuine teenage ennui. Plus, Steve Buscemi.

9) Kandahar
The Middle East, through the lens of Mohesen Makhmalbaf, is nearly as bizarre as Middle-Earth. A fictional account of Afghanistan you can't afford to miss.

10) Memento
A gimmick that actually works: Christopher Nolan's elegant mystery filmed from the point of view of an amnesiac tells its story backwards and already spawned endless Internet discussion about the details of its plot. An instant cult favorite.
