Berlin Film Festival 2006 Award Winners
The Golden Bear, the top prize awarded at the Berlin Film Festival, went to the low budget Bosnian film "Grbaviva." Director Jasmila Zbanic's debut film about a single mother and her twelve-year-old daughter is set in post-war Sarajevo; the intimate story is also politcal, bringing to international attention the rape of 20,000 women during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.
Oscar Predictions for the 78th Academy Awards - March 5, 2006
Oscar season is always a little painful for us over here at World/Independent Film. Year after year, the films we love most don't get the attention of the box office or the Academy. Even this year, when small-budget films like Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Crash have taken a significant bulk of the nominations, our favorites went unheralded. As a small act of defiance, here's our list of who to bet on, which nominees are the worthiest, and who really deserves an award.
Independent Spirit Award Nominations
The 2008 Independent Spirit Awards were announced, with Todd Hayne's "I'm Not There" leading the field with four nominations which included Best Feature and Best Director.
2006 Indie Spirit Award Nominations.
The 2006 Indie Spirit Awards have been announced. Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" led the field with six nominations for the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards.
2006 Cannes Film Festival Awards
Ken Loach's Irish civil war drama "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes festival. The Grand Prize was given to Bruno Dumont's Flandres. Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" received two prizes: best screenplay and best actress.
Sundance Film Festival: The Awards
Sundance Film Festival juries gave top prizes to two films, "Padre Nuestro" and "Manda Bala." "Grace is Gone" won the Grand Jury Audience Award.
2008 Sundance Film Festival Award Winners
Courtney Hunt's "Frozen River" won the grand-jury prize for best U.S. drama at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. "Trouble the Water" earned the grand jury award in the U.S. documentary competition. "The Wackness" won the audience award for favorite U.S. drama as chosen by balloting among Sundance movie-goers.
2008 Indie Spirit Award Winners
Jason Reitman's "Juno" led the 2008 Indie Spirit Awards, taking home awards for best feature film, best female lead Ellen Page and best first screenplay for Diablo Cody.
