Dogville DVD

The Bottom Line

A true masterpiece, Lars von Trier's "Dogville" is a film like no other. Set on a soundstage, the fable-like depression drama is played out both on the screen and in your imagination. Trier's exploration of human nature is as fascinating as it is disburbing, and Nicole Kidman performance is never less than riveting.

Guide Review - DVD review: Dogville

For courage and sheer audacity in form and plot, no filmmaker on the world stage currently matches Lars von Trier. Following in the tradition of Emily Watson in "Breaking the Waves," and a martyred Bjork in "Dancer in the Dark," Nicole Kidman suffers for the sins of an entire community in "Dogville."

A gangster's moll by the name of Grace, Kidman is on the run from a gang of thugs. The reluctant townspeople agreed to hide her, and before long, begin to love and care for her. But when outsiders begin searching for the fugivite in their midst, the goodness of Grace's protectors suddenly sours. A harrowing tale of arrogance, power, cruelty, and abuse develops.

The ensemble cast includes Paul Bettany, Chloe Sevigny, Lauren Bacall, Jeremy Davies, Stellan Skarsgard, James Caan, and Patricia Clarkson.
