Background:

Charlotte Gainsbourg was born in London, England on July 21, 1971, but raised in Paris, France. She is the daughter of French singer, songwriter and actor Serge Gainsbourg and British actress Jane Birkin. Her uncle is the screenwriter Andrew Birkin who directed her in The Cement Garden. She is married to French actor and director Yvan Attal, and they have two children.In 1994, Gainsbourg made her stage debut in David Mamet's Oleanna at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnass

Family Controversy:

At the age of 13, she recorded the controversial duet with her father, Serge Gainsbourg, called Lemon Incest, which featured on Serge's 1984 album Love on the beat. Two years later, she appeared in the incest-themed drama Charlotte Forever, directed by her father.

When casting his film about Bob Dylan, Todd Haynes first choice was the wife of the pop star and the French actress he had in mind was Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's come as no surprise to us. Charlotte Gainsbourg has been an enchanting presence on film -- from her adolescent performance in L’Effrontée for which she won a César Award for "Most Promising Actress" to recent roles in The Science of Sleep, Lemming, and I'm Not There .

She made her screen debut in 1983 as Catherine Deneuve's daughter in Love Songs. She made her stage debut in 1984 in David Mamet's Oleanna at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnasse. She's appeared in numerous film productions, including My Wife Is An Actress, a popular romantic comedy by her eal-life husband writer-actor-director Yvan Attal and Alejandro González Iñárritu's 21 Grams. In 2006, Gainsbourg also released the pop album 5:55
