Top 5 New DVD Releases - April 5

By Jurgen Fauth & Marcy Dermansky, About.com

In case you missed it in theaters, here's your chance to find out why Miles hates Merlot: last year's biggest indie hit, Alexander Payne's "Sideways," is out on DVD. Also: the hard-hitting documentary "The Corporation," the French thriller "Who Killed Bambi?", Barbet Schroeder's debut "More," and James L. Brooks' "Spanglish."

1. Sideways

Sideways DVD
It's funny, heart-breakingly sad, and just as good at home as on the big screen: Alexander Payne's deservedly popular hit "Sideways" is out on DVD. Set in sun dappled California vineyards, the buddy road trip features the perfectly attuned ensemble cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Sandra Oh, and Virginia Madsen. DVD special features include commentary by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, 8 deleted scenes, and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

2. The Corporation

The Corporation DVD
Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott, and Joel Bakan present a thorough investigation of the history, power, and impact of corporations on modern civilization. Featuring interviews with Michael Moore, Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky, the filmmakers makes a convincing case against corporate culture, likening the business institution to a psychpath. The 2-disc set has two commentary tracks, Janeane Garofolo's interview of Joel Bakan on Air America, and over five hours of additional footage.

3. Who Killed Bambi?

Syringes, botched anesthesia, and cranium saws: Gilles Marchand's taut hospital thriller "Who Killed Bambi?" is not for the squeamish. With Sophie Quinton and Laurent Lucas.

4. More

Made in the late sixties, Barbet Schroeder’s ("Barfly," "Reversal of Fortune") directorial debut is a treatment of pleasure, pain, and tragedy that stands apart from other counterculture films. Featuring a soundtrack by Pink Floyd, the film tells the story of college graduate Stefan who hitchhikes from Germany to Paris, where he finds falls for Estelle, a fellow American expatriate and heroin addict.

5. Spanglish

James L. Brooks (As Good as it Gets) latest film got unfairly maligned by the press. A thoughtful comedy about class in America, the director takes on Los Angeles itself, looking at the complications that arise when the well off Clasky family (Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni) bring a Mexican maid (Paz Vega) into their home. The DVD features deleted scenes, footage from the casting session, and "How to Make the World's Greatest Sandwich" with chef Thomas Keller.
