The Bourne Ultimatum, Interview, Two-Lane Blacktop

By Jurgen Fauth & Marcy Dermansky, About.com

Jurgen saw Paul Greengrass' The Bourne Ultimatum twice and will attest to the film's extraordinary thrill factor. Also out on DVD this week, the tense indie Interview in which Steve Buscemi and starlet Sienna Miller face off, and the cult classic road filmTwo-Lane Black Top, featuring James Taylor in his only acting role.

1. The Bourne Ultimatum

Universal Studios
Paul Greengrass’s The Bourne Ultimatum is the leanest and most exciting of the series yet, a chase movie of breathtaking purity. Everyman Matt Damon is perfect for the role of Jason Bourne, a bland cypher in search of his identity. Madrid, London, Tangiers and New York City are the settings for the film’s setpieces, and Albert Finney, David Strathairn, Julia Stiles, Daniel Bruhl, Patty Considine, and Joan Allen co-star.

2. Interview

Sony Pictures
Known primarily as a character actor, Steve Buscemi is also a formidable filmmaker. For his third film, Busecmi remade murdered Dutch director Theo Van Gogh's 2003 Interview. Buscemi also stars in this dark independent film about a political journalist sent on assignment to meet an attractive B-list soap star (Sienna Miller). In an amazing NYC loft, the mismatched pair engage in a powerful showdown of wits.

3. Two-Lane Blacktop

Criterion Collection
We know them as iconic singers, but crooner James Taylor and the Beach Boy's Dennis Wilson starred in a film together - one of the greatest road movie ever made. Drag racing east from L.A. in a souped-up '55 Chevy are the wayward Driver (Taylor) and Mechanic (Wilson), accompanied by a tag-a-long Girl (Laurie Bird). Along the way, they meet Warren Oates's Pontiac GTO-driving wanderer and challenge him to a cross-country race. Maverick director Monte Hellman’s stripped-down narrative and sophisticated look at American male obsession make this one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema.
