Top 3 New DVD Releases - October 10, 2006

From Marcy Dermansky, for About.com

Gael Garcia Bernal has a thing for his little sister, a vengeful twin carries a gun, and Michelle Williams radiates joy: three independent films that should not be missed are out this week on DVD: James Marsh's The King, Michael Cuesta's Twelve and Holding, and Wim Wenders' Land of Plenty.

1. The King

James Marsh's The King, a tense little indepedent film starring the marvelous Gael Garcia Bernal, is now out on DVD. Bernal gives a wonderful performance as Elvis, the returning prodigal son. The supporting cast includes William Hurt as a born again preacher sporting side burns and a radiant Pell James in the dual role of little sister and love interest.

2. 12 and Holding

Michael Cuesta, who explored a painful sexual awakening in L.I.E., seems to have deep insight into youth. 12 and Holding follows the stories of three twelve-year olds forced to recognize their own mortality. The ensemble cast features newcomers Conor Donovan, Jesse Camacho, Zoe Weisenbaum (destined for stardom), Annabella Sciorra, and Jeremy Renner.

3. Land of Plenty

Michelle William's warm, emphatic presence brought to life Wim Wender's earnest independent drama Land of Plenty. Wenders takes an unusual look at America post 9/11, taking the audiences into homeless shelters in Los Angeles and trailer parks in the desert.
