Top 4 New DVD Releases - November 14, 2006

By Jurgen Fauth & Marcy Dermansky, About.com

New and recommended this week: the Academy-Award-nominated resistance drama Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, Michael Apted's intimate documentary 49 UP, and the conjoined twin rock flick Brothers of the Head.

1. Sophie Scholl: The Final Days

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Marc Rothemund's Sophie Scholl: The Final Days tells the story of teenage resistance against the Nazis; Julia Jentsch's steely performance as the title character is nothing less than brilliant.

2. 49 UP

Michael Apted's ongoing documentary experiment is never less than fascinating. Since 1964, when they were just seven years old, Apted has been interviewing the same group of Londoners every seven years to track their lives. At age 49, the now familiar cast of characters are taking care of grandkids, getting divorced and remarried, and all of them still doggedly pursuing happiness.

3. Brothers of the Head

"The best conjoined-twin movie ever made," Tara McCarthy wrote in her five star About.com review of Brothers of the Head. Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe's debut film features faux documentary footage and mesmerizing performances by real life twins Harry and Luke Treadway.

4. Who Killed the Electric Car?

It's not too strong to call it murder. Learn how the automotive industry knowingly buried the distribution of one of the most popular and eco-friendly inventions of the 20th century: the electric car. The compelling documentary lays out cases against not only the auto industry, but also big oil, corrupt federal and state governments, and consumers themselves.
