Director and Producer: Joel Coen gets the director credit and Ethan Coen produces, but the celebrated filmmaking team actually collaborates through the entire process. They have been jokingly referred to as "the Two-Headed Director."
The Basics: The Coen Brothers hail from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Joel was born 29 November 1954, Ethan emerged nearly three years later on 21 September 1957. They began writing screenplays soon after college. Their first film was Blood Simple, a modern film noir starring Frances McDormand (wife of Joel.) They have gone on to make more than a dozen films together.
Quotable Classics: Perhaps no other film is quite as quotable as the Coen Brother's The Big Lebowski. Jeff Bridges stars as "The Dude," a laid back stoner who seeks compensation when thugs ruin his rug. The film only gets better with repeated viewings. In addition to the pleasure of Bridges' bravura performance, added delight can be found through the entire cast of quirky oddballs: Julianne Moore as an aristocratic heiress, a then unknown Philip Seymour Hoffman as a hapless assistant, and John Turturro as the bowler who goes by the name Jesus.
Cult Classics and Career-Making Roles : In their long and varied career together, The Coen Brothers have made an almost ridiculously long list of cult classics: Raising Arizona, Fargo, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski. They've created infamous characters, quotable lines, and sparked the career of many of their regular actors: Holly Hunter rose from obscurity with her star turn as a baby loving police officer in Raising Arizona (1987), and Frances McDormand received an Oscar for her role as pregnant police officer in Fargo. John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and John Turturro frequently appear in the Coen Brothers films.
No Country For Old Men: The Coen Brother's most recent film No Country for Old Men, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel, tells the story of Llewelyn Moss, a man whose life if never the same after he finds a suitcase of money and decides to keep. While the directors broke new terrain with a new cast of characters that includes Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, the film covers familiar thematic terrain.
