Since 9 Songs screening at Cannes Market 2004, Michael Winterbottom's look at a sexually explicit love affair, has stirred up a great deal of controversy. Combining some of the hottest bands, pulsating concert footage with equally ecstatic love making, Winterbottom poetically explores the nexus of sexuality and music in the dynamic of a young relationship.

Structured as a series of remembrances of times past by Matt, 9 Songs takes place in London in the summer of 2003. Matt meets Lisa, a visiting American student, at a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club concert at the Brixton Academy. Matt falls in love with her and the film follows their relationship, as well as seeing 9 songs performed from each of the concerts they go to together featuring Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand, Michael Nyman.

Intercutting the concert sequences with their lovemaking, Winterbottom uses their lovemaking to depict their relationship as it unfolds and inevitably ends with Lisa's return to the States at Christmas.
