Alternatives: The Last King of Scotland

Friday September 22, 2006
Next to the advance screeings, what we like best about the life of a film critic is the kick we get out of recommending a great movie. Hooking up an appreciative audience with an overlooked gem is a lot more fun than panning failures. Making good work is difficult, and we'd rather praise than take potshots.

Kevin Macdonald's The Last King of Scotland opens today, starring Forest Whitaker as the Ugandan despot Idi Amin. But instead of posting a lukewarm review, we came up with a list of five movies we like better. In the age of Netflix, BitTorrent, and the IFC channel, there are more choices than ever, and you don't have to settle for whatever the studios are trying to cram down your throat this week.

Hate this idea? Love it? Tell us in an email or leave a comment below.

I think the movie was great and it left me wanting it to never end. SO you guys may not like it but i sure do. Good job Whitaker!

Hey Delina, glad you liked the movie. We were trying out a new sort of feature with this, but I don’t think it worked particularly well. I actually thought Last King of Scotland was halfway decent, with a great performance by Forest Whitaker –whom I never get tired of. I’d still recommend Idi Amin Dada, if you liked this movie.
