Sundance 2002

Christina Ricci in "Pumpkin"

It's Sundance time. Robert Redford's little festival for the small filmmaker has morphed into the industry's biggest showcase for independent films. Last year, it produced such critical and box office hits as "Memento," "In The Bedroom," and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." This year's lineup features over 125 full length films, in categories ranging from dramatic film, world cinema, documentary feature and midnight movie.

Festival Highlights

•  "The Laramie Project" - Moisé Kaufman's dramatic look at the transformation of a Wyoming community after the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard starring Buscemi, Laura Linney, and Christina Ricci.
•  "The Dancer Upstairs" - John Malkovich's directorial debut tells the story of a Latin American policeman (Javier Bardem, of "Before Night Falls") who sets out to capture a famous guerrilla leader.
•  "Storytelling" - Sundance favorite Todd Solodnz is back with two tales of abuse, revenge, murder, teenage homosexuality, drugs, and twisted sex.
• "The Good Girl" - Jennifer Aniston has stepped off the "Friends" podium and gone Indie in Miguel Arteta's film about a bored young woman who strikes up an affair with the dime-store incarnation of Holden Caulfield.
• "Coastlines" - Victor Nunez ("Ulee's Gold", "Ruby in Paradise") returns to Sundance with the premiere of "Coastlines." An ex-con returns to his Florida hometown after three years to settle a debt and becomes embroiled in an affair with the wife of his best friend, the local sheriff.
