Right now, there are plenty of documentaries to choose from. Fine Line Features The Filth and the Fury, chronicles the rise and tragic fall of the infamous British punk band The Sex Pistols. The film has received raved reviews. Want to learn about wrestling? There is Lion's Gates Beyond the Mat, a film that takes an inside look into the world of professional wrestlers. David Schisgall's The Lifestyle documents the inner workings of a nudist colony. Frederick Wiseman's latest film Belfast Maine recently had its New York premiere at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade theater.

Surprise Oscar winner A Day in September will be in theaters this May. This documentary about the slaughter of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972 beat the widely popular Buena Vista Social Club. The film by Kevin MacDonald combines dramatic archive footage with detailed eye-witness testimony, including the first and only interview ever with the sole surviving terrorist who took part in the operation and who has been living in secrecy ever since.

Other academy award nominees you should look for:

Genghis Blues: This film tells the story of blues musician Paul Pena's journey to remote Tuva to compete in a national throat singing competition. Winner of the 1999 Sundance Audience Award for Documentary.

On The Ropes: Brett Morgan's film explores the lives of three boxers training for the Golden Gloves tournament.

Speaking in Strings: Paola di Florio's film profiles controversial violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, whose unique interpretations of timeless classics have both enraged and enraptured critics and audiences all over the world.
