Movie Pitchers, the great little theater in midtown N.O., offers comfy couches, local brews, and the best selection of small, independent, international, and all-out quirky films available in the Crescent City. As someone who has spent many happy hours in the soft cushions with a choice flick and a mug of Abita Amber, I was distressed to receive the following message:

From Rene Paul Broussard (zte@bellsouth.net):
"Call to Action for Survival of Movie Pitchers."

Movie Pitchers has received a certified letter from Sav-A-Center telling us that we have to vacate the premises by October 31, 2000. As soon as they got their approval from the City Planning Commision, they went back on their word to everyone. They had previously indicated to Movie Pitchers, to The Times Picayune, to Gambit Weekly, to the TV stations, to the Neighborhood Association, and to the councilman Scott Shea that they would be willing to sell that portion of the building that Movie Pitchers occupies at the same cost per square foot that they purchased it for.

The Neighborhood Association only put their blessing on the project provided that Movie Pitchers would be allowed to survive. Sav-A-Center was apparently only giving lip service to everyone until they got the approval of the City Planning Commission. Once they received their approval, they decided to go against everything they had told to all of us. Scott Shea and the Neighborhood Association are fighting the matter, but we strongly believe that it will take a huge burst of pressure from the public to have Sav-A-Center buckle under and stick by their word. If you want Movie Pitchers to survive, we urge you to take action by calling and or writing to the following:

1. Your councilman if you do not live in District A. (Call every day if you can)

2. The councilman from District A Scott Shea (even if you do not live in District A). Phone number 565-6345 (Call every day if you can)

3. Write letters to Gambit Weekly and The Times Picayune.

4. Write or call Mr. Frank Vise, Director of Real Estate for Sav-A-Center:

Phone Numbers: (Call every day if you can) 846-6008, 846-6015, FAX 846-6066
Address: Mr. Frank Vise
Sav-A-Center Food Market
P. O. Box 60093
New Orleans, LA 70160

Home Office: Hopelawn Property I, Inc.
2 Paragon Drive
Montvale, New Jersey 07645
(This is part of Sav-A-Center and the property is in their name)

Only if Sav-A-Center believes they will have a huge public relations fiasco will they buckle under and stick by their original word. Please take action if you want Movie Pitchers to survive.
